Fashion falling behind in fight against forced labor: report

International nonprofit Business & Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) is out with new research. According to the fourth edition of the KnowTheChain Apparel & Footwear Benchmark, several brands are falling behind in the fight against forced labor, despite promoting sustainability and social justice progress. Scoring 19 out of 100 on average, supply chain transparency remains a rampant issue across the luxury fashion players studied.

Nordic nations setting luxury trends of tomorrow

From Denmark to Norway, prestige is increasingly showing enthusiasm for the north. Luxury companies across categories are pouring resources into Nordic nations, framing them as the setting of fashion campaigns, hosting Arctic automotive retreats and, among other activations, opening five-star hotels in the area. As the international community discovers a love for all things hygge and biophilic, Scandinavia and its trademark trends are proving to be in the midst of defining the landscape of tomorrow.

Stella McCartney reveals new green innovations as COP28 gets underway

British fashion house Stella McCartney is pushing forward its eco-friendly strategies. As the world gathers for COP28, held in Dubai this year, a range of innovations is being revealed in partnership with 15 eco-materials companies including LVMH-owned Champagne maker Veuve Clicquot — the U.K.-based brand also released its 2023 Impact Report just in time for the occasion, detailing company environmental performance for the 2022 calendar year. At a Sustainable Market on-site at the global climate summit, visitors and international leaders can peruse the fruits of Stella McCartney’s collaborations up close, from grape leather shoes to the planet’s first fashion item made using biological recycling.

The New York Times, Google bringing ‘Style Outside’ to Art Basel

The New York Times is bringing attention to fashion around the world. Teaming up with Google, the publication is expanding its “Style Outside” column through September 2024, marking the launch of the new installment with a piece on Tokyo street looks through the lens of American photographer Simbarashe Cha. Using the Google Pixel 8 phone, the Emmy-winning creative is exploring apparel and culture, including at the upcoming Art Basel in Miami, an event many in luxury are activating for — the news comes as Mr. Cha is appointed as a staff photographer and visual columnist after two years as a contributor.

Met Gala 2024: exhibition, event theme revealed

The countdown to one of the biggest nights in luxury fashion begins, as The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute shares updates. Announcing next year's exhibition and gala theme as “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the institution is publicizing plans for future programming. The Fifth Avenue art display will go live from May 10 to Sept. 2, 2024, while the department's annual fundraising event is slated for May 6, 2024.

Vestiaire Collective, Burberry launch brand resale platform

Luxury resale platform Vestiaire Collective is partnering with British fashion label Burberry in support of a circular economy. Per the announcement, secondhand shoppers in the United States and United Kingdom can now trade in preloved Burberry pieces via the brand's new Vestiaire Collective-backed platform. The launch arises by way of the digital leader's Resale as a Service (RaaS) program, first introduced in 2021.

Retrospective at Fondation Louis Vuitton to feature works from American artist Mark Rothko

LVMH’s Fondation Louis Vuitton is presenting a major exhibit. From Oct. 18, 2023, to Feb. 4, 2024, the organization is hosting a retrospective dedicated to American artist Mark Rothko, the first to arrive in France since 1999. Comprised of some 115 works, the event will encompass the famed creative's entire career, in turn submerging Louis Vuitton deeper into the world of luxury as the house's institute reflects on a powerful force of culture.

Valentino joins luxury in centering arts for spring/summer 2024 show

Italian fashion house Valentino took to Paris Fashion Week to present a new collection. The brand tapped English singer-songwriter FKA Twigs for the spring/summer 2024 show, which took place in the city’s fine arts school, École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts. The “Unearth Her” performance reflected the emphasis creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli put on raw materiality, and together, he and the musical talent are establishing Valentino among the ranks of luxury labels embracing fine arts.

French fashion house Louis Vuitton is placing a re-imagined purse in the hands of four current brand ambassadors. The brand's rereleased “GO-14" handbag receives a boost from actors and ambassadors Léa Seydoux, Deepika Padukone, Jung Ho-yeon and Elaine Zhong as part of the company's new fall/winter 2023 womenswear campaign. Richemont-owned Belgian leather goods house Delvaux is looking to a medieval art genre for a new collection. Norse symbolism emanates throughout the spring/summer 2024 array, the 11 handbags dancing with jewel tones, animal imagery and themes of heraldry. With a special focus on shared mythologies, Delvaux worked with Belgian creator Kasper Bosmans to bring the vision to life, tapping into the surging art market that many luxury fashion labels are likewise moving to benefit from.

Prada to produce next-gen spacesuits as NASA brings first woman to moon

Linking up with American infrastructure developer Axiom Space, Italian fashion brand Prada is designing outfits for a milestone mission, slated for 2025. Engineers from the luxury house are collaborating with the systems teams supporting NASA's upcoming Artemis III lunar landing attempt, helping to craft spacesuits with materials and features that will protect astronauts in an extraterrestrial environment. Expected in 2025, the exhibition will mark the first time that a woman steps on the moon -- if completed successfully, she will be wearing Prada.
